I’ve been all kinds of busy today, so I’m just now sitting down to the blog after dinner. Mondays typically pull me in all different directions because I usually grocery shop & clean my apartment on Monday. If I have to work, like I did today, it’s a world of busyness for me! Thankfully today was a rest day after my 5K. Although, the weather was so perfect for running, so I rather missed it.
Sugar Detox Recap
So I gave a little bit of my thoughts about the sugar detox in this post. If you missed it altogether, I did a sugar detox for one week with Laura from Mommy Run Fast. The detox meant that I was trying to avoid added sugars in my diet. This means sugar and the many, many forms of it. If the food didn’t naturally have sugars in it, such as fruits, then it was nixed from my diet.
I wanted to do the detox because I felt seriously dependent on and addicted to sugar. Typically, I want to have a treat or dessert every day. And until I have it, I feel like I am completely not satisfied, no matter what or how healthy I could eat. I’ve always been a big sweets person, but lately, the cravings have been driving me mad. Eating sweets is actually not even that enjoyable anymore because I eat them so much. So clearly, I wanted to turn things around.
Cutting not only desserts and sweet treats but sugar out of my diet altogether sounded downright scary. I was sure that I would fail, but I didn’t! This is huge for me. Typically, if I tell myself I can’t or don’t want to have dessert, it’s the one thing that I gravitate to most and usually end up having it anyway. The fact that all added sugar was cut out was actually better than just desserts, though. And of course, the online community was a big factor in helping me want to stay on track.
How It Went
At first, it was hard. And what was even harder was realizing that almost everything that you think wouldn’t have sugar in it actually does. Random things like bread crumbs & salsa had sugar in it, which aren’t even that sweet. There are also a bajillion forms of “sugar.” There’s plain old white sugar, which is listed as “sugar” on food labels. Then there’s all of sugar’s cousins: brown sugar, cane juice, cane syrup, mollasas, etc. Artificial sweeteners are everywhere too, but I already avoid those, with the exception of stevia.
I denied sweets that were right in front of me three times, which is like a miracle! The treats were some type of cookie bar, brownies, and cookie dough dip with graham crackers, and lemon cake – REAL treats, people! I remember the treats distinctly because I remember trying very hard to ignore them and not eat them.
I also put anything that had added sugar or leftover Easter candy in a closed box all week. I’m actually thinking of keeping them there from now on because I was much less likely to reach for those things when they weren’t right in front of me in the cabinets.
What really helped me avoid sugar was focusing on healthy eating in general. I knew that I couldn’t still be eating high-glycemic or fatty junk foods and feel good. I made a solid meal plan and prepped healthy snacks and meals for the week. If it’s not easy to choose, it won’t be likely that I choose it. Making healthy choices the easy choice was key for me.
After day 3, the crankiness started to wear off, and I FELT AMAZING. All week I had more energy, my mind was much clearer, and my runs were awesome. I’m pretty sure I told my husband every day when I got up that I felt like I had a lot more energy. He probably got tired of hearing it, but it’s true. I felt like a new woman!
And I’m pretty sure that my great race time for the 5K was part due to the fact that I was sugar-free. Whenever I eat junk, I really slow down on my runs. So the fact that I was eating much better & cutting sugar, I felt like a speed demon!
“Desserts” During the Week
Undoubtedly, I did need some kind of sweetness throughout the week. I was craving chocolate and a good coffee drink. I tried to find some healthy alternatives to all-out sugarified desserts to satisfy me.
- apple with butter & cinnamon on them, baked (this was not as good as it sounds)
- PB&J Pudding, which I will still eat even after the detox, it’s that good
- a Lara Bar
- No Sugar Cinnamon Latte
I’m so glad I tried the Lara Bar! I think I may have had one of these a lonnnng time ago, but I couldn’t even remember what it tasted like. I got the peanut butter cookie flavor based on its amazing ingredients of peanuts, dates, and salt. How that can taste like a peanut butter cookie, I have no idea, but it did!
I’ll definitely be picking more Lara Bars up in the future (although not all of the flavors are free of sugar).
Changes for the Future
The detox really helped me breakthrough my sugar addiction. I realized that it is totally possible to cut sugar from my diet and still function. I also realized that I want to be a lot more aware of added sugars and sugar in general from now on. I don’t want to let it creep in so easily and make me a sugar-crazed mad woman all the time.
Because of the detox, I have a few goals for the future. I want to…
- aim for 3 “treats” a week, 1 of them being “the real thing” or indulgent, and 2 being healthier options
- quit using coffee creamer & use almond milk instead. I realized over the detox that I’m just too addicted to my creamer. But I had it for the first time today after a week and I didn’t even like it anymore!
- Start using stevia instead of white sugar for baking, etc.
- Try to avoid added sugars 5 days a week (weekdays) with the exception of my possible treats
These goals might sound a little bananas to you. But I noticed so much of a difference in my mood and my energy levels, and I don’t want to lose that feeling. I felt out-of-this-world amazing last week, and I want to keep it that way!
