Daily Imperfection: Oatmeal Disaster

Good evening, peeps! Today has been looonnnng and it’s not even over yet. I wasn’t planning on blogging today, but I haven’t done a daily imperfection post in quite a while and today was just screaming for it.

It all started this morning when I shot upright in bed when my 6 AM alarm went off. I got up so promptly to go check on breakfast. I was so excited to try this recipe for crockpot oatmeal. It just sounded so cool to me to try an overnight oatmeal recipe for the crockpot. Who would have thought? Last night when I put all the ingredients in, it looked like this.

Oatmeal Before

Well guess what?

It was a total disaster. I followed the directions to a t, but it turned out terribly. Even my sweet husband couldn’t hide his disgusted face with this nasty excuse for oatmeal. It got burnt all around the edges really badly. The apples were mushy and tasteless. The consistency of this was not even really like oatmeal but just mush.

You can see in the photo that the apples weren’t even red anymore! The apples and the whole thing were just very weird and “off” tasting to me. I was pretty disappointed as I had been putting this recipe off for a few days, so when I finally decided to try it, I was expecting a great warm breakfast. I wish my photo could let you taste just how bad it was. I hate throwing food away too, but this stuff had to go. Out of all the crockpot recipes or any recipes I’ve made really, this one has been the worst! And I don’t even really know what made it so bad, either?

Oh well! Instead, I settled for some toast and a green smoothie. Not bad!

So after I finally got breakfast out of the way, I knew I needed to do my workout, but I felt really sick. I just felt gross for an hour or so after having that oatmeal and being disappointed. I waited a bit to do my workout. I did an abs routine that is definitely hard. Once through and I was ready to quit. Hoping my abs get stronger through the next few weeks.

Then I had a 3 mile run on the books for today, which definitely needed to be done inside. I headed down to the gym to find that the only working treadmill (there are two, but one is broken at the moment) was being used and the guy using it was BLASTING the TV. No thank you! I didn’t even want to stay and try to do something on the elliptical or bike. So I went back to my place for a bit to come back later. Not a big deal, but it just felt like one of those days where everything doesn’t go right.

After finally getting my workout done and getting ready, I had a simple, fool-proof lunch: an English muffin pizza and some carrots. This never gets old to me :)

After a decent not-ruined meal, I felt more like myself. I got all ready for work and was out the door. I had a good but slow afternoon of work. It seems like no one wants to shop when it’s cold and gloomy out.

  • Question for you: what’s been your biggest recipe flop?

    • I definitely don’t feel good about saying a recipe was bad, but it was so beyond bad that I had to. I believe warning others will be saving a lot of disappointment and burnt crockpots!

  7. I also hate throwing out food! But I can only power through so long before I give in. :)

  8. I was thinking about trying Oatmeal too– I had a Steel Cut Oats idea in mind… I’m thinking twice about it now. I actually think I had the same Pin on my Pinterest!
I think I’m germ free enough today to start my Black Bean Enchillata Bake :-) I hope it doesn’t stick!

    • Yeah, i grabbed this recipe from another blogger doing the crockpot challenge, so I’m sure it’s floating around. The pictures from the original post make it look amazing, so it’s no wonder. Just spray the crap out of your crockpot and stir often to prevent the sticking, and hope for the best!
