Ever since I got pregnant, I have been all about the carbs. I’m not really sure what it is, but things like bread, crackers, waffles, pancakes, rolls – anything bready and carb-loaded – has been so satisfying lately.
While I have been giving into my cravings, I dislike giving in when it’s not a healthy version of it. The other night when I was making dinner, I thought rolls would be a great addition to really round out the meal and satisfy my all-thing-bread-obsessed self.
I wouldn’t say these rolls are super healthy, but they at least aren’t from a can or full of preservatives. I know what’s in them, and that’s good enough for me.
I’m also really into recipes lately that only make as much as I need at a given time. I love baking, but I do not like having 12 muffins around for just me and my husband. I wanted to make these rolls but knew if there were 12, I would easily eat half of them!
This recipe only makes 6 good sized rolls, which is nice for just the two of us. The recipe can easily be doubled though to accommodate more mouths.

- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 yeast packet
- 1/2 of a 1/3 of a cup vegetable oil
- 2 tbsp. brown sugar
- 1 egg
- 1/2 tsp. salt (or more to taste)
- 1/2 cup warm water
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Mix the water, yeast packet, sugar and oil in a bowl. Let sit for a few minutes to activate yeast
- Add salt and egg.
- Add flour one cup at a time, mixing well before adding the next. You know you have enough flour when the dough doesn’t stick to the sides of the bowl. Flour amount may vary a little, so don’t worry about throwing in more or less.
- Form dough into 6 balls. Place on cookie sheet and let rise for 5-10 minutes if you have time. If not, you can just throw in the oven right away and they’ll be fine.
- Bake for 15 minutes or until the tops are browned.
- These are great with butter and honey on top or apple butter.
