A while back, I did a week-long sugar detox thanks to Laura’s challenge. Typically, I am not really for cutting out whole food groups or doing anything crazy to my diet. Buuuut, I have a little bit of a sweet tooth, sometimes to the point that healthy eating just goes out the window.
At the time I did the first detox, I was so needing to cut out too much dessert & sweets from my life. Laura did hold a second challenge, but it was while I was away on vacation, so I didn’t participate. I’ve decided to do the challenge on my own in preparation for the Boston 10K this Sunday, as well as continue to kick myself back on track with craving good foods over chocolate chips…
The results I had from the last challenge were amazing. I had a lot of energy, I craved healthy foods, and I was a lot faster and full of energy for my runs. The main motivation behind doing this challenge again is to try and eat as healthy as possible before my race. I think it’ll really help!
For the detox, I am simply cutting all added sugars. This includes a long list of names that sugar has. I found a good list of all the names over at Pop Sugar. I am not cutting naturally occuring sugars, like that found in fruit.
This means I will be saying goodbye to all of this for a week…
All boxed up! Out of sight, out of mind, right?
I made a meal plan and actually did all my shopping for the week at Trader Joe’s, which is unheard of for me. I usually do about half at TJ’s, half at a “normal” grocery store. But it was Friday when I shopped, and getting caught in traffic going to two stores was less-than-appealing at the time.
Some goodies I got from Trader Joe’s includes…
1. Contemplating…Inner Peas.
The TJ version of snap pea crisps. AMAZING & sugar-free! I bought two bags.
Don’t ask me where the first one went.
2. ZICO water
I’ve been getting this stuff for a few weeks now since my TJ’s store just started carrying it.
At first I wasn’t crazy about the taste, but I’m finding it’s really good for post-run hydration & recovery. Basically, this stuff is like energy in a bottle to me.
I love pears. For some reason, I find that Trader Joe’s pears taste better than anybody else’s. Other stores pears never ripen for me!
The fact that they sell a whole bag of them = perfect. Snacking on pears, I will be!
I would absolutely not be successful in this challenge if I didn’t make a solid meal plan. I’m excited to be having a ton of smoothies (my favorite), as well as trying some totally new recipes this week.
- Green monster smoothie
- Chocolate blueberry smoothie
- Overnight oats with fruit
- PB smoothie
- Strawberry Chocolate PB Green Smoothie
- Toast with/PB & banana
- English muffin pizza & salad (had to hunt for sugarless tomato sauce, but I found it)
- Pita Pizza (recipe for that here)
- TJ’s black bean soup & toast w/avocado
- Berry green smoothie: orange, mixed berries, banana, spinach, water
- Breakfast sandwich: egg, English muffin, cheese, ham
- Skinny Taste Chili
- Cheddar Quinoa Edamame Bake
- Soup & grilled cheese
- Keilbasa pasta skillet
- apple with peanut butter
- lara bar
- string cheese
- Peanut Butter & Jelly Pudding
- Skinny Mocha Frapucino by Brooke –> can’t wait to try this!
And there you have it. I’m looking forward to the detox even though I realize the first two days or so will be tough. Hopefully I get a lot of energy and have a great race time to report come the end of the week!
